Foldering Thoughts – Improve your Short Term Memory

by jim on July 31, 2007

For the past few months I have been experimenting with a mental process to improve memory, the theory that I have been working with, is “Foldering Your Thoughts”.  This approach to retaining information in memory seems to be working pretty well and I am having some great results. Although it is absurd sounding, I know but if it gets results then I am all for it.foldering-image.jpgStart out with basic information that’s rolling around in your head, locations, people, songs, ect, and throw them into a mental folder where we will begin to sort them all out. It was helpful to me not to place folders into folders, for some reason this confuses the process. This was my experience though; it may be easier for you. Give it a try!Think of a “People” folder, and imagine putting all the people’s names and information relating to that person into this folder.  Image them vividly, recall names, numbers, associations (where you met them) small details about them…ie. Hair color. Place all of these thoughts into your “People” folder. Since this is a pretty important folder to have handy, we will keep it towards the top of our folder organization.Create folders for all aspects of your life; Work, School, Home, and begin organizing your thoughts within the appropriate folder. Try doing this for a few days; I really have noticed an improved sense of Short Term Memory, as well as Organizational Memory by using this exercise.
